PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION

  • Passive Fire Protection (PFP) is a group of systems that compartmentalize a building through the use of fire-resistance rated walls and floors, keeping fire from spreading quickly.

  • Passive Fire Protection is an integral component of structural fire protection and fire safety in order to contain or slow the spread of fire, limiting the movement of flame and smoke, and minimizing the danger of fire-induced collapse or structural distortion.

Examples of PFP

  • Fire Dampers – used in ducts to prevent the spread of fire/smoke
  • Smoke Dampers – used in ducts to prevent the spread of fire/smoke
  • Fire Doors – help compartmentalize a building & provide a means to escape
  • Fire Walls & Floors – help separate the building into compartments to stop the spread of fire/smoke from room to room
