FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a fire damper?

A fire damper is a device that is installed in an air distribution system, designed to close automatically upon detection of heat, to interrupt migratory airflow and to restrict the passage of flame.

Simply explained…

  • A fire damper is a device which closes upon detection of heat preventing fire from spreading from one area to another.

  • Smoke dampers are a similar device which close upon the detection of smoke. Smoke dampers can also be used to “Control” the movement of smoke.

  • Fire smoke combination dampers prevent fire, smoke or the combination of both, which close upon detection of either fire or smoke.

  • Ceiling Radiation Damper is a fire damper installed in a ceiling membrane of a fire resistance rated floor-ceiling or roof-ceiling assembly limiting radiative heat.

What is the required frequency for inspection and testing of fire dampers?

An operational test of each damper shall be performed after installation of the damper is complete. Then, each damper must be inspected and tested one year after installation. This requirement allows building owners to hold installers accountable for any repairs needed which are typically under warranty for the first year.

Upon completion of the first year fire damper inspection and testing, the frequency shall then be every 4 years, except in hospitals, where the frequency shall be every 6 years.

What are common deficiencies seen?

  • Access to fire damper is obstructed by pipes, wire racks, other duct work, ceiling grid
  • No duct access door installed
  • Improper installation of fire dampers preventing closure of the damper
  • Lack of mechanical drawings, accurate life safety drawings

Can B&B perform repairs?

Yes! B&B technicians are trained and equipped to perform repairs and install new fire dampers when needed.

How long should a building retain past documentation of fire damper inspection and testings?

  • Documentation should be kept for the life of the device
  • Documentation should be made available for the AHJ

What is the AHJ or Authority Having Jurisdiction ?

  • AHJ – is the organization responsible for enforcing the codes and standards set by the NFPA
  • Joint Commission, fire marshal, county building department, insurance companies, health department, building owner etc.
